Summer is fast approaching and a lot of homeowners, condominium owners and apartment dwellers are wondering what they can do to reduce their energy bills. Anybody who has spent a summer in South Florida realizes that this is the time when energy bills can skyrocket.
We all want to stay cool and comfortable when temperatures reach into the 90s and humidity levels bring the heat index to over 100 degrees, but this comes at the expense of energy efficiency.
One way you can reduce your energy bills this summer is by installing a programmable thermostat. Most come with four settings for all seven days of the week, meaning you can adjust the temperature schedule to fit your schedule.
Most choose to set a wakeup temperature, a temperature for while they are at work, a temperature for when they return in the evening and a temperature for when they fall asleep. The idea here is to turn up the thermostat to use less energy when you don’t need it as much.
You can even adjust the settings for weekends when you’ll probably want to sleep-in or will be at home for a greater portion of the day. These thermostats allow for overriding at any point in the day as well. If used properly, some can save about $100 a year by using a programmable thermostat! That’s a savings of about $8 a month!
