Preparing Your Air Conditioner Unit For Cooler Months

Posted on AC Maintenance, AC Tips, Seasonal Weather, The Cooler Blog December 30, 2014

Even though we don’t experience any snowfall in South Florida, it’s important to take care of your AC unit during the months it tends to go unused. As the coldest months of the year draw near, you’ll want to make sure that your outdoor air conditioning unit (commonly known as an HVAC system) is prepped for being used less as the temperature drops. These maintenance tips will help to guard against common issues like rust.

1. Turn Off Unit

Find and open the plastic or metal lid that covers the electrical circuit. Flip the switch to turn the unit off as this prevents the unit from turning on during unusually warm days. This will keep water out of the unit which will guard against rust or any freezing hazards.

2. Clean Your Unit

Take the time to clear the unit of any debris that may have gotten stuck to the unit over time, using a hose accomplish this task. Don’t forget to let the unit dry completely.

3. Keep Unit Covered

Cover the unit with a waterproof plastic or vinyl cover for protection from any outdoor elements. Don’t use the AC cover when the unit is on as this can cause damage.

4. Weekly Checks

Remember to perform weekly checks of your unit and remove any debris that may have accumulated. This will keep your unit in proper working order throughout the winter and save you from costly future replacements.
