Keep Your Home Comfortable without Breaking the Bank

Posted on Money Saving Tips March 20, 2019

Even though spring has barely started in Florida, the typical summery heat is already beginning to take hold in some parts of the “Sunshine State.” If you live in Plantation FL, you may have already started relying on your AC to stay comfortable. Unfortunately, a thermostat set below 78 degrees will hike your energy bill up – especially as it gets harder and harder for your air conditioning to cool your home.

Lucky for you, there happens to be a lot you can do to keep your home comfortable at low to no cost! To keep your bill manageable and your home cool, we recommend you do the following:

  • Make sure your replacing your AC filter monthly. The dirtier the filter is, the more clogged it’ll be – blocking air flow and making your system work harder than it needs to. Fresh, clean filters can help you save up to 10% on your bill!
  • Become a fan of… fans! A ceiling fan is a great way to cut down on energy costs; they use about the same amount of energy as a 100-watt bulb. Fans have been known to make a room feel up to 8 degrees cooler.

Pro tip: if your fan has the different settings, make sure that the blades are spinning counterclockwise (pushing air down). Clockwise rotations are for the winter, when air is being drawn up.

  • Keep track of the things that are generating heat in your home. Lights, video game consoles and televisions all emit heat, so make sure that you’re only using them when needed.
  • Have any unused areas in your home, like storage rooms or guest suites? Close the vents to the spots that don’t need the cold.
  • If you follow all of these tips above, this next one will be much easier: Set your thermostat to 78, or even 80. Believe it or not, these temperatures can be pretty manageable for most people – especially if you take additional measures to reduce heat in your home. According to the Department of Energy, you can save as much as 10% a year on cooling by setting your thermostat 7-10 degrees above its typical setting.

Pro tip: Ask us about installing a programmable thermostat in your home, which can automatically raise your thermostat for you when you’re not home – and set it back down for when you get back.

Hopefully these tips will help keep your home’s temperature down, as well as your energy bill. The best tip out of them all, however, is simple: don’t settle for less when it comes to your home’s AC installation! At All Year Cooling, our certified and licensed experts will size your unit exactly to your needs, so that your system works well and lasts long.
