HVAC Repair Scams and How to Avoid Them

Posted on AC Tips May 8, 2019

When it comes to AC repair in Doral FL – or anywhere, for that matter – you need to work with a provider that you can trust. A sad truth of the industry is that there are technicians out there that are trained to scam you out of your money. In order to keep your wallet safe to weed out dishonest AC services, it’s important to know what the common scams are and how to avoid them.

Below are some HVAC repair scams that you should be wary of before working with an AC company, and what you can do to avoid them:

  • Scam #1: Requiring Cash Up Front

This is one the simplest scams to avoid. If any technician ever asks to be paid in cash up front before any service has been done, refuse immediately. In fact, you might also want to delete their contact info from your records to make sure you never call them again, because no reputable HVAC company should ever require payment before the repairs are completed. This is one of the biggest red flags that you should look out for.

  • Scam #2: Replacing Several Parts

If your repair technician takes a look at your system and starts coming up with a list of parts that need to be replaced, it’s important to be skeptical of the situation. Rarely is it the case that multiple parts are causing your air conditioning to fail. It’s far more common for one defective part to keep the system working, so don’t trust technicians who claim you have 5 expensive parts to replace. Whenever you’re faced with this situation, the best advice is to seek another perspective from a different company. It never hurts to receive expert opinions from multiple sources, as this can help separate the scam artists from the quality technicians.

  • Scam #3: Promising the World

This scam is one of the oldest tricks in the book and isn’t exclusive to the HVAC industry. If a company makes promises off free services or discounts early on in your communications with them, don’t be surprised if they back out on these promises once it’s time to write the bill. Untrustworthy AC companies seldom respect a verbal agreement, which is why you need to insist on a written agreement before a technician arrives for your appointment. Also, use your best judgment and remember that things that are too good to be true probably are!

At All Year Cooling, we pride ourselves in being a company based on honesty and integrity. We believe the only way to run a good business is to provide a great service that respects the customer. If you think you might be getting scammed by another AC company or if you’ve been scammed in the past, give us a call for our advice.
