  • DO clean your air conditioner filter on a monthly basis.
  • DO keep the unit a few feet away from the window or building to prevent rain or condensation from leaking into your home.
  • DO replace old units with new ones that have the Energy Star logo; it’s the mark of efficiency.
  • DO have a professional perform a thorough cleaning and lubrication of your A/C unit’s motor every three years or so.
  • DO have the air ducts checked for leakage when installing a new heating and cooling system.
  • DO use ceiling and portable fans for better airflow. They use very little electricity and efficiently circulate air throughout the house.
  • DON’T set your thermostat on the coolest setting. Keep your indoor temperature settings at efficient levels for the right amount of cooling in your home.
  • DON’T go cheap with the unit; it will cost you in the long run.
  • DON’T use an extension cord to run your unit. A long cord will cause the voltage to drop, resulting in the air conditioner working harder.
  • DON’T keep plants near the unit.
  • DON’T use bricks, wood, or other objects to support your unit in the window. It’s recommended to mount it on proper brackets. It makes sense and is more secure.
  • DON’T use sharp objects to clean out your unit, as they can damage the condenser fins and cause leaks.
  • DON’T let the furnace or air conditioner salesperson sell you a bigger unit than you need.
  • DON’T think that you only need to insulate the attic during the summer.
