4 Ways To Cool Off Your Home Without Overusing Your Air Conditioner

Posted on AC Repair, AC Tips, Fort Lauderdale May 8, 2018 by Terry Jones

The high summer temperatures can be a definite temptation to leave the air conditioner on full-blast all season. With these tips, your summer energy bills will lower and your air conditioner will thank you.

  1. Shut Off Lights and Electronics

On hot summer days, shut off lights around the house to help save energy and lower the temperature in your home. Often, light bulbs put out as much heat as light, so turning them off can drastically affect the temperature of a home, as can unplugging unnecessary electronics, which produce heat waves even when not in use. You’d seriously be surprised by how much light affects a room’s temperature. In addition, by just using daylight, you can save energy on electricity as well as cutting down AC use!

  1. Be Smart With Your Fan Use

Fans are a great way to help cool yourself off without having to overuse your air conditioner. Electric fans or ceiling fans both contribute significantly to cooling homes – especially in specific areas where you are lounging or working. Using an electric fan instead of your central air conditioner helps to deliver cool air exactly where you want it, rather than overusing your AC and charging major bills to keep the whole house cool. This can be especially helpful when there is a group of people located in one room, for example movie night in the living room. With so much body heat in one area, it is natural for the room to feel hotter and causing you to subsequently crank the AC to a more comfortable temperature. By just putting a rotating fan in the room, it can feel cooler and a more manageable price.

  1. Use Windows Strategically

Your windows are a source of both cooling and heat depending on the time of day during the summer months. Open your windows at night to let the cooler air in, but keep them closed during the day, along with drapes and shades, to reduce heat. If you don’t want to close off your house to the light so drastically, consider placing larger potted plants in front of windows to help soak up some of the suns energy rays. Externally, you can also use patio overheads, latticework, and awnings to block some of the sun without creating such a dark space indoors.

  1. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate

Attic insulation will have a great impact on the internal temperature of your home. Insulation will help keep the cool air from your air conditioning inside your home instead of letting it escape through your ceiling and ventilation systems.
