4 Things to Consider When Buying an Air Conditioner

Posted on AC Tips, Tips March 15, 2018 by Terry Jones

man with a fanWhether your unit goes out in the middle of summer in South Florida, or you’re replacing it proactively to avoid breakdowns, consider these four things before you make your purchase.

How Loud is it?

Every unit should be clearly marked with a noise score in decibels. If you have a light sleeper in your home or young children who might awaken easily in the night, you want to get the quietest model that fits your budget. Units with a rating in the high 30s to mid-40s should emit little noise except for the blowing of the fan.

Where Will You Put It?

If this is an outdoor unit, as opposed to an indoor window unit, you want to avoid placement in direct sunlight, if possible. The air conditioner pulls air from the outside, cools it, and sends it into your home. The hotter the external conditions, the harder the unit has to work. A unit that runs for many hours every day means higher utility bills and a shorter lifespan for the machine.

Are Smart Features Important to You?

As technology advances, new air conditioners and thermostats, like NEST,  learn your favorite temperatures and schedules it according to when you’re home the most. Along with easy to use apps, you can get real-time and summary data on your unit’s efficiency. If those things matter to you, check the specs on the air conditioner you’re considering. If those features don’t appeal to you, then you might save some money by picking up a unit more basic features.

What is Covered by the Warranty?

Check the warranty coverage carefully so you know what to expect. Take note of how long the warranty lasts as well as whether it’s for parts only or if labor is also covered.

Buying a new air conditioner is a significant investment in your home. Do your homework and let All Year Cooling help you get the right unit for your home.
