As it does every year, summer 2016 is winding down and the thoughts of back to school preparations are creeping in. With the 2016-2017 school year in sight, make the last few weeks of summer count with these great local, family-friendly events happening throughout South Florida.
For Nature Lovers:
Sea Turtle Treks
From June 16th through August 27th every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night you may have the rare opportunity to stumble across newborn sea turtles making their way into the ocean after hatching. The night starts off with an informative presentation, and then tour guides will take you to the known sea turtle nests along Fort Lauderdale Beach. If you’re lucky enough to catch newly hatched turtles, you’ll get to witness volunteers help to safely guide the babies to the ocean. They even assist any stragglers that may head towards the city lights by accident. Admission is $25.00 and all proceeds go to help fund the rescue. Not only will you be helping to support sea turtle preservation efforts, it is an incredible experience for families and children of all ages.
Flamingo Gardens – Back to School Weekend
If you haven’t visited Flamingo Gardens yet, this is your chance! The weekend of August 13th and 14th admission will be half price for all visitors. There will be free pony rides from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., so plan to get there early. There will be special events happening throughout the day including crafts, games, animal encounters, and live music. Founded in 1927, this lush botanical garden is filled with giant trees perfect for hugging and intriguing wildlife including peacocks, otters, flamingos, alligators, and beautiful birds of prey.
For Music Lovers:
Friday Night Sound Waves
Great music is universal. Every Friday night until November 18th, you and your family can enjoy free performances at the intersection of Las Olas and A1A between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. The performers vary each week. Bring some beach chairs, snacks, and your family and dig your toes into the sand while enjoying vibrant performances from all genres.
Margate Under the Moon
Food trucks, live music, crafts, games, and beer- what else could you need for a perfect Saturday? Recurring on the second Saturday of each month from now until November 12th, enjoy this free event with the whole family.
For Car Enthusiasts:
For the adventurous type, world-famous Monster Jam will be at the BB&T Center August 13th and 14th. This event is recommended for families with older children; the noise may be disruptive to younger children. Parents- you may want to grab ear plugs. Tickets range from $10.00 to $53.00 based on location.
Super Car Saturday
Another event “geared” towards car enthusiasts, Super Car Saturdays is a monthly event comprised of over 250 of the most exotic and rare Super Cars around. Held between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., this event is held at Lamborghini Broward in Davie. Happening on August 13th this month, attendance for visitors is free.
For History Buffs:
Ivy Stranahan and the Women’s Suffrage Movement
With the election looming, give your family some context about women’s suffrage how local leader Ivy Stranahan contributed to the movement in Florida. On Monday, August 15th at 12:00 p.m. join Michelle Foster Sammartino at the Stranahan house as she guides you through the archives that tell the story. Admission is free, and guided tours of the Stranahan House will be 2-for-1 after the presentation.
Bike Tour of Fort Lauderdale Historic District
See the highlights of the historic New River by bike. Tours run every day at 11:00 a.m. for $49 ($29 for children); tickets include bike rental and entrance to the Fort Lauderdale History Museum and the Pioneer House Museum. See the most famous sites in Fort Lauderdale, learn about their history, and get some exercise at the same time! You’ll bike a total of 3 miles over the course of two hours.
